Area 51 and Alien Spaceships
One of the most persistent conspiracy theories that you’ll find is Area 51 - the US military’s secret base in the Nevada desert, which is said to be home to crashed alien spaceships and all sorts of top-secret technology. Area 51 is on the southern shore of Groom Lake, Nevada and, in fact, must be the least secret base in the world, as it has been referenced countless times in books, television and movies. Officially, it is a place for the development and testing of new weapons systems and experimental aircraft.
The lake was used for bombing practice during World War II. Defence contractors Lockheed built a runway there and began testing new aircraft in the area. There were also nuclear tests conducted nearby and the United States Air Force continued to use the area for various aircraft developments.
The area has been guarded for years and anyone found sniffing around has been quickly escorted away. Some people have reported follow-up visits by the FBI after they attempted to photograph the base. It didn’t appear on any maps and was only officially acknowledged in 2003 when the Federal Government admitted its existence. Of course, it has long been a poorly kept secret and it has been the focus of a variety of conspiracy theories.
The most popular theory is that the alien spaceship supposedly recovered at Roswell is kept at Area 51. In fact, all UFO’s which have been captured over the years have been taken there for study. Some theories suggest the base was actually constructed as early as the 1920’s and has been the focus of alien visits and investigations since then. There are also claims about incredible technological developments that have possibly been assisted by alien technology. Robert Lazar made such statements in the late eighties. He claimed to have worked at the base on flying saucers. There have been various declarations over the years from people who claim to have worked on reverse-engineering alien technology at Area 51 – but of course there is no proof.
The theories have certainly caught the public imagination and Area 51 has become synonymous with aliens and UFO’s. The Pentagon has consistently denied that there are any alien links or that any aliens, spaceships or alien technology have ever been found. Aerial photographs of the site reveal nothing untoward and some theorists have accepted the possibility that the U S Government has been working on building flying saucers and perhaps these kinds of projects have been misinterpreted by people as alien in origin. Of course, some people claim the satellite images only show the surface and that the base extends several floors into the earth below – hiding all manner of secret operations.
There is no doubt that access to the area is highly restricted. There are major security measures and people who work there fly in and out on special aircraft – but all of this is consistent with the idea that the base is there to develop and test new aircrafts and weapons.
